Is it time to start giving an allowance? Daughter will be starting 6th grade

Hi everyone! My lil girl is going to be starting 6th grade next year, and my husband has been thinking about giving her an allowance. Is it too early? and how much should we give if we do start giving her an allowance?

Also how do you do it? I got a few dollars weekly when I was growing up but now I'm seeing kid's debit cards being all the rage. How are you handling this?
