The Dying Art of Dim Sum. A Beautiful NYT Documentary.
With Lunar New Year coming up, I wanted to share a bit - not only on my culture, but also on myself as a first-gen Asian American growing up in New York.
This heartfelt documentary goes behind the scenes of a dim sum restaurant I grew up eating in throughout my childhood, and gives a glimpse into a few of the workers' lives. It's something I really connect with, not just because dim sum is at the core of Cantonese culture, but because of how closely it mirrors my own family. My parents worked 40+ years in a similar fashion in these restaurants, my mom as a dim sum cart lady, and my dad as a baker.
A beautiful little documentary (24 mins) from the NY Times that goes beyond just how these restaurants operate, and into the stories of the people who work in them.
tldr; I did not expect to tear up a bit for a dim sum video.
