Streaming prices have surged nearly 70% in four years, and they're still going up

If I had to guess, Netflix being a publicly traded company have incentives to produce better operating expenses. This gives them access to cash and lending at lower rates. When they return better operating expenses, bank and hedge analysts buy more equity, driving equity value up. This effectively gives shareholders more money, unrealized.
If you look at CPI data and Greenstreet Property Price Index, you’ll see energy, compute, rent (or property tax), and professional services have all increased dramatically in cost. In order to keep the operating expense ratios to be competitive in the public stock market, they must raise prices. Otherwise they wont be earning enough revenue or good enough margins on operating expense.
Operating expense are accounted for differently than capital expense like building a new data center or hiring a bunch of temp labor to build their product or investing in cybersecurity, so they can still spend on these categories without big impact to their stocks, because it helps improve their competitive posture.
Real answer is that they've found that users are willing to pay. If enough subscribers quite in protest, they'd apologize and stop. People have become too used to streaming services to quit now.
I don't even get incentive emails to resub. It comes across as incredibly arrogant considering how bad these services tend to be these days.
Must be at least two years I reckon. Could even be way longer. But we were with them for what seemed like forever before that. Never had a "Enjoy a free week" or "Here's 20% off a month" etc. It just seems like they're doing too well to care about losing people.
Netflix revenue has been increasing by 5-6 BILLION dollars a year. People don't seem to care about the price increases unfortunately

I remember netflix before they added ads was 8.99/mo, now it's 19.99 for the same plan. I don't want to jinx it but it would not surprise me if it goes to 24.99 and 29.99...
It already is imo. They used to have all the good shows under one roof (if you logged into US Netflix) and you could share with relatives that weren't shackled to you.
Now you're region locked, can't share and most of the good third party stuff was rehomed on new streaming services set up by the shows original owners. Ironically these new prices might have been justified before all these changes.
But maybe it's doing something for somebody. I hear they're doing live sports etc. We mainly liked sci-fi/fantasy type stuff, which rarely outlived their first seasons 😡
