I'm so conflicted with generative AI. On one hand, as a tech-enthusiast, it's very cool tech. On the other hand, the human impact, and the potential misuse of it is very concerning. Worst is that it feels like pandora's box been opened and we'll just have to see how this changes everything in a few years.
The “bag is out of the cat” if I may misuse the colloquialism… but my concern is the ongoing data hoarding and my continued lack of interest in using Meta products and services. I’ve de-Googled, de-Miceosofted, host everything I can myself… and am still forced into WhatsApp to exist in the Caribbean and Europe.
Relative to your actual comment, while I dislike the use of the word quality when describing content (I also dislike the word content, but we’ll talk about that some other time) I think some definition of quality will win out in the long run. Look closely in image search when searching for (presumably) copyright and royalty free stock images. Yikes!
Fascinating that even a technologist like yourself is de-bigteching. I'm still quite in the system myself as it's not quite feasible for me to leave it yet (which is probably the problem).
What's the reason for the WhatsApp requirement in the Caribbean and Europe? Never been there myself.
In re: to content and quality, I can definitely see it shaping out that way. I suspect the limitation of LLMs in that it can't create original content will create a cycle where the definition of quality will continually shift to whatever the SOTA models cannot generate/need to train to catch up on. Definitely interesting times.
