The Trains Stopped. The 16-Year-Old Didn't.

January 1949. The worst blizzard in Great Plains history.

Trains buried. Roads gone. Army grounded. 23 children stranded 40 miles out in -35°F.

Don Miller was 16.

He tied six sleds to four horses and rode 22 hours straight into the storm. Fed the kids snow and jerky. Lost one horse. Brought all 23 children home alive.

The U.S. Army saw what he did and launched Operation Haylift the next day — saving 2 million cattle.
