Chai is just Tea, it isn't a variant, it's just another to say Tea, especially in different languages.
However, to shut you up. I’ll say this. As someone who is Chinese and Korean, I literally speak the languages where these words originated. Cha (차) and Chai are just the northern/land-route pronunciations of the exact same root character. When English speakers combined 'Chai' (from the land route) and 'Tea' (from the sea route), they created a new, specific compound word in English to denote a spiced, milky beverage. You aren't being culturally accurate; you're just failing a basic geography and trade history lesson.
