Does anyone understand pi?

I have it on my phone and have meant to figure out why for the last year, but I never think to learn about it when I have spare time.

I don't understand what the whole project is for or about. Why did they create a new cryptocurrency? What blockchain is it running on? What is the whole system supposed to do, for the users, for commerce, for anyone else?

What is the point?
