Does Anybody Wonder Why The People Looking For Alternatives, Are Not Here Yet And Still On Reddit ?

This is kind of a dumb question, but I think it's worth asking anyway. What actually stops people from giving a Reddit alternative a real shot?I want to be clear upfront: this isn't a "what's wrong with [site]" post. Everyone has different needs, one size doesn't fit all, I get it. What I'm more curious about is the pattern I keep seeing. I've been on that sub for a long time now, and when I stack up what users say they want against the alternatives that actually exist here, something stands out.A handful of people are genuinely looking for hobby or interest-specific spaces (and honestly, those posts are refreshing).

But the majority? They're not really looking for a Reddit alternative. They're looking for a Reddit duplicate (just one that moderates according to their specific political values, amplifies the voices they already agree with, and filters out the ones they don't). Which is kind of ironic, because Reddit's whole original premise was never about politics and fighting. It was about hobbies, interests, and niche communities. So they're not even trying to replicate Reddit (they're trying to replicate the worst version of what Reddit became).

And here's the thing: that's not an alternative problem. That's a user problem.

It's also worth saying: a genuinely good alternative wouldn't even want those users. If someone's primary motivation is finding a platform that validates their political identity and wages the same culture wars in a new location, they're not going to build community (they're going to build chaos). The drama would follow them there just like it followed them from Reddit, because the drama was never about the platform. As for why they're like that: people generally don't seek out new platforms to grow or explore.

They seek them out because something on the current one wounded their ego (a ban, a removed post, a community that didn't validate them). So the motivation was never "I want something better." It was "I want somewhere that agrees with me." The platform is almost incidental.

What really gets me is that nobody seems willing to just say that out loud. If what you're genuinely looking for is a politically aligned space with moderation that mirrors your worldview (fine, that's a real thing people want) just own it.

Dressing it up as a search for a "Reddit alternative" muddies the water for people who are actually trying to find good platforms for the stuff they love.Because those platforms exist.

There are solid alternatives with real communities, interesting niche spaces, and a different culture worth experiencing (and people keep walking right past them because they didn't come pre-loaded with the right politics). They'll spend energy trying to construct a new echo chamber from scratch instead of just finding the corner of the internet that's actually about the thing they care about.

Maybe that says more about what some people actually want from social media than any platform ever could.

Thanks for taking the time to read this if you did I appreciate it have a good day

I'm using Fediverse platforms: PieFed and Mastodon specifically. I found out about this platform through the r/RedditAlternatives subreddit. I am also a big proponent of having a variety of social media platforms so if something happens to a social media site, you can just pick up on a different one.

Awesome! There's also soooo many fediverse apps to choose from too which is great.

I'm on that sub too, i dig it. I also always post about new alternatives i find in there even though the user base is very picky lol

M biggest gripe is it logs you out too quickly…..

Whoops! It was a bug on mobile/unstable connections. It should be fixed in 1.2.1 if you update

You are getting logged out of your account here ?

Yea it was a bug on mobile internet haha

1. People are used to reddit and know it. It's a biological thing in our brains, we prefer to stick to stuff we already know.

2. Also reddit is the biggest forum in the internet with huge amount of users, it's hard to quit it entirely.

Unless they are using Old Reddit, the easier interface on this site is a no brainer for them to switch. Regarding #2, if we just recruited like 10 people each to this site, it will get the ball rolling where things won't feel quite as empty.

Just gotta get the word out to others , so much more potential here. Reddit it seems gets worse features as the time goes by. I thought places were supposed to improve with time.

Here if there is a problem we can message Jing. On Reddit it’s damn near impossible to contact any real human. It’s all AI.

I feel this place is also friendlier. Not sure why that is.

I got a bullshit lifetime ban on my 13 year old account and I couldn't find a human being to talk to about my appeals. The worst thing was they banned all my new accounts too. They must track your IP address and I hear they do device tracking too. Reddit was like a 2nd home to me (I had like almost a million reddit points/karma) and I thought I would never find anything like reddit again until I found this site which I hope can be the next reddit but better.

I feel you bro, I got lifetime ban on my 8 year account and device and ip locked

Agree. It’s not going to be easy lol but I really do think we might have something special here *not biased of course 😂

Damn, Delilah, you woke up and decided to just put it all out there how you really feel. 😂

Personally, I agree with just about everything you said here.

And I’d say that the main reason that more people aren’t on OddsRabbit just yet is mostly just a problem with marketing. Even with me knowing about the website, it doesn’t pop up even with googling it sometimes.

This site just has to get the word out more somehow and I gaurentee people will start flocking here.

LOL that's absolutely hilarious! Yeah pretty much I guess LOL I tend to have little moments like that it's just the red alternative sub sometimes pisses me off LOL like you say you want this but like your actions show something else like at least just be honest about it you know? And then of course there's others on there that think they speak for everybody like if it's not or open source and federated then no one's going to be interested it's like no you won't be interested but that doesn't mean that everybody else will too

Tbh I think the network effect Reddit is really hard to overcome. I’ve also been focused on fixing bugs and adding new features for the recent wave of users, where marketing has taken a backseat.

Having said that, Reddit is also 21 years old, and OddsRabbit is barely 3 months so I’m optimistic about the future haha

Wow, OddsRabbit is barely 3 months old?!

That's good so am i

People like me giving up find reddit alternative long time ago. Lemmy and fediverse is second biggest and it's not great

I agree, I feel like Lemmy could have some potential if it wasn't so political, but it is what it is

Lol, everyone there seems only talk about us politics, tankie going insane, and admin instance fighting each other. Block all that and 90% content disappear

Lol oh ya you honestly couldn't be more right

FrostFalcon just now

I honestly didn't know this alternative existed until someone mentioned it on Reddit. Now I'm here because of the Consta shadow banning there

I have no idea, this place is great

Reddit is big enough to be anonymous. I can see all your guys’s posts across the site. On reddit, there is enough variety of people to surprise you, where smaller sites feel a bit like a club.

Just heard about the app myself, I think people just aren’t aware of it. Everyone’s heard of Bluesky when talking about X, I don’t think there is one for Reddit yet

Yeah I'm so happy you're here! Where did you hear about odds rabbits from if you don't mind me asking? I'm just curious because It's kind of interesting knowing where people find new websites and stuff

I was searching for a forum like reddit and found it on google

Nice

In this case I think it's about size, bigger is better sometimes 😇 But many people are very pissed with the state Reddit is in rn so I think there's good chances for alternatives to take off. I made my first Reddit acc two weeks ago and got shadowbanned on my second day. I then found out there's a literal laundry list of hidden rules that they don't like new accounts doing 🤭 the r/shadowban sub is being spammed constantly with people asking if they're banned lol, it's mad.
