I saw an old post asking for recommendations. Here is a honorable mention: "Hajime no Ippo". A hero's journey. Surely a breath of fresh air in the growing climate of overpowered anime protagonists.

How does it compare to some of the newer stuff? A few I've tried watching from 1990s and 2000s felt like they were lacking a bit of something
Hni is easily one of my favorite series of all time because of how colourful the cast is around the main character that is Ippo. Solo leveling or any of this newer stuff falls flat on its face of how the tension between Ippo and his opponents are set up.
I rewatched it many times out of how amazing the story is.
I am sure you'd think it too: "How interesting can a series about boxing be?"
How wrong was I... "Super Eyepatch Wolf" on youtube made a video that's called "Why you should watch Hajime no Ippo" that's worth watching.

It's why I haven't watched kuroko😅
Kuroko no basket quickly falls into that ability trap of anime tropes. "Omg, Kuroko disappeared. It's his ability?!?! Oh no, I noticed it too late!"
Get out of here with that shit. xD
I think Kuroko has a good concept, but it was a terrible execution. I wouldn't mind Kuroko being wiped from my memory forever.
Hajime no Ippo has no such bullshit going on and has a somewhat realistic approach to boxing, wherein the author is a boxing coach in real life: Boxers do run out of stamina mid to late match, and getting punched in the face affects their footwork and overall body coordination.
Most of us know that Mike Tyson's signature move is hook -> uppercut, and HNI is no different. Some characters do have their own little gimmick, but it never comes across as some far fetched super-human ability like Kuroko has.
