Tad Williams' Funderlings
How do you pick names for a LOT of characters?
In the Shadowmarch series by Tad Williams there's a race of small men who live below the earth and build tunnels and other stone structure. Each of them has an "earthlike" name; Chert and Opal the Blue Quartz husband and wife team with their son Flint, a priesthood of funderlings called the Metamorphic Brothers, Nodule and Boulder, Cinnabar, Mica and Hornblend
Although it's believable, it felt forced, like he collected names from a textbook dive of earth/geology sciences then distributed them when he created a character
I'd prefer not to use ChatGPT for a task like this. But, how would you name a lot of characters with one unifying trait?
