Hello all and welcome! π»
I had been contemplating starting this community for a while now, and then this morning I thought of a funny/spooky story from when I was younger. One of those stories you just HAVE to share. So here we are... Welcome to The Midnight Society π―οΈ
When I was about 19 years old, my boyfriend at the time wanted to move in with me. I wasn't quite ready to fully leave my parents' house yet. I was saving money, and rent was cheap. I brought it up to my parents, and they mentioned that we could rent their unfinished basement for super cheap.
We'd had a flood a year or so earlier, so the carpets had been ripped up and a lot of the walls weren't finished. But there was a bedroom, a laundry room, a full bathroom, and we had access to the kitchen upstairs. It was a deal. And I still had my parents close by.
My boyfriend agreed, and we moved in.
Now, I should mention that this house was considered quite old for where I'm from, and we definitely knew it was haunted. I can share some of those stories at a later date.
But when I was about 16, my dad was replacing the washer and dryer in the laundry room when he found a Ouija board planchette.
My father, being a very Christian man, immediately snapped the planchette in half and threw it in the garbage.
Fast forward three years.
My boyfriend and I were living in the basement, and all was well. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary happened. The only things that really went bump in the night were the massive spiders.
Until one night.
My boyfriend woke up and realized I was missing from the bed. He lay there for a few minutes, assuming I was using the washroom. After a little while, he started wondering where I'd gone. He hadn't heard the toilet flush or the water running, and there really wasn't anywhere else to go in an unfinished basement.
He got out of bed and checked the washroom.
I wasn't there.
Then he heard rustling coming from the laundry room.
When he looked inside, he could just make out the faint outline of me sitting on the floor in front of the dryer.
He flicked on the light.
I had both arms inside the dryer, tossing around the laundry that was still in there.
He asked me what I was doing.
I didn't answer.
He stood there watching me for another moment. My eyes were open, and I just kept turning the laundry over and over again.
He asked me again what I was doing.
This time, I looked him dead in the eyes and said,
"I'm looking for him."
So he asked, "Who's him?"
I turned back toward the dryer and, almost in a whisper/growl, said,
"Him."
He managed to pull me away from the dryer and get me back into bed. Understandably creeped out, he lay beside me but couldn't fall back asleep.
A few minutes passed.
I got out of bed again.
This time, I went into the bathroom. He waited, but once again, I didn't come back.
Eventually, he got up and noticed that the bathroom light wasn't on. He walked over to the door anyway and flicked on the light.
I was standing in front of the mirror.
Just staring at myself.
In the dark...
He took me back to bed again, and thankfully, that was the last time I got up that night π
I'd only had one other sleepwalking incident before this, and it was pretty harmless. My mom found me in front of the fridge, and apparently I told her I was "shopping."
My little sister sleepwalked a lot in that house, too. There was always something unsettling about it.
But here's the part that has always stuck with me:
After we moved out of that house, I never sleepwalked again. Neither did my little sister.
I still don't know who I was looking for that night. I don't know if it had anything to do with the broken planchette my dad found in that exact same laundry room three years earlier, or if I was simply sleepwalking and my brain came up with something incredibly creepy.
But I still wonder sometimes...
Who was "him"?

For the past 10 years I've rented the basement level of a rural home that was built in the 1860s. The landlady occupies the main and upper floors, and she's owned the home since 1982. She lives alone, except for her dog, and of course Elizabeth.
Elizabeth is a ghost.
Elizabeth was here when I moved in, but the landlady can't recall when she first noticed her. Elizabeth stays mostly in the 'pink' room above the front porch. Sometimes we hear her rustling on the stairs. The landlady used to close the drapes in that room but Elizabeth always opened them again, so now the landlady doesn't bother.
The landlady was on holiday, and work was being done in my kitchen, so she said I could use hers while she was away.
The first night I was eating when the kitchen cupboards over the sink opened and the dishes smashed into the sink. The next morning I had a glass jar of cranberry juice on the table that just crumbled into a mess of juice and shards of glass.
Each time I left the kitchen, I'd get downstairs and the stairway door would slam shut.
After that I figured Elizabeth wanted the place to herself, so I stayed downstairs. I could hear her moving about, the dogs would look up at the ceiling but wouldn't bark.
Anyway, she leaves me be down here, and I leave her be upstairs. All good.
I just stay out of her space and accept, like all of us, she has a bad day once in awhile. And she's actually been fairly quiet for awhile now. There are still things that get moved around, drapes found open, that sort of thing. And she's never really been too violent - a few broken dishes and the juice bottle was about it.
The landlady prefers not to think of her. She just keeps Elizabeth's door closed and, thankfully, Elizabeth seems ok with that.
That said, the landlady's bedroom is just 10 feet down the hall. The washroom is right across from Elizabeth's room though, and the landy doesn't go in there much. She uses the downstairs one.
We seem to have found the right balance where everyone is happy.
Oooo I have my own ghost stories as I used to live in a haunted apt where the lady there tickled my feet at night sometimes o.o
I got the chills reading this! Iβm glad I didnβt read this at midnight π
How was it living in a haunted home? Any other occurrences?
I also just noticed the icon and banner in the community is such a nice touch @Anxious_Trash !!
Ghosts and the paranormal have always fascinated me. I've spent many hours reading stories on this site, The Shadowlands.
