Okay, full idiot disclosure here... I must turn to Google 3 or 4 times a day while browsing around on OddsRabbit. The older I get, the more I don't know.
My most recent Google search... "what are Mukbang Videos?" ...ew 🫣
Answer: "Mukbang videos are online broadcasts where a host films themselves eating large quantities of food while talking to an audience. The word comes from Korean terms meaning "eating" and "broadcast""

Yeah… I don’t ever want to “yuck” someone else’s “yum”, but I don’t exactly see the appeal.
But like, KIND OF?? I mean, people watch cooking shows, which lavishly show the preparation and presentation of food, so I don’t think it’s THAT different…
There’s a korean guy who drinks a lot and he makes “next day” videos of making spicy ramen for his hangover remedy… it’s technically Mukbang but it’s not “overt”… it’s mainly watching him cook, then you get a minute of cuts at the end, of him eating his meal - and drinking more! Hair of the dog, I guess!
Yeaa totally agree. There are some over-indulgent ones which is a bit much for me personally, but they're super super popular. I have a feeling it started as something normal like what you've mentioned, then because it's on the internet and "for the views", it slowly got more and more extreme.

I 100% am guilty of watching mukbangs, but more the ones where they eat off of Facebook marketplace all day, or they go to 1 star restaurants all day, etc.
