Baldur’s Gate 3 pissed me off for one reason: the companions are TOO good!!

(Context: This post is written by someone who has not completed the game past reaching Baulder's Gate the city.)

Okay, let me start off with this: Baulder's Gate 3 lives up to the hype in totality...In fact, it lives up to the hype TOO MUCH.

I went into this game kinda going through the motions, not expecting too much beyond maybe a solid story. I was originally just going to play an evil route where I just twist my moustache and see how evil the game would allow me to go. Generally, most games really are afraid to commit to the "Evil" route.

But as I went through the game, the first thing I started to realize was "Huh...these companions are kinda really in depth.". And then that fact kept becoming more and more true!

Every. Single. Companion. Is likeable and has depth.

  • Astarion, who I thought was just going to be the typical asshole, is actually incredibly sympathetic in his situation with being a vampire. Hearing what he's been through it's like "Yeah, I'd be a selfish asshole too if I went through that.".
  • Karlach is so painfully relatable that she's practically a sibling in my eye's. Every interaction is basically me wishing I could high five her and go "Hell yeah, Karlach.".
  • Shadowheart is basically the definition of character development and one of the best romance arcs I’ve seen in a game. (Good god, her voice actor killed it. And romanced Shadowheart just tugs at my heart 100% of the time.
  • Lae Zel is on the same level as Shadowheart, except she is a Class A Tsundere. If I didn't want to betray my love for life Shadowheart, I would romance Lae zel in a heartbeat
  • Gale is my guy. I don’t even care if it’s a terrible idea—I’m helping him ascend. Human supremacy, let’s go! We shall Fireball the very gods themselves!!
  • Wyll...pisses me off because he forgot the most important lesson in making deals with devils is to NEVER MAKE DEALS WITH DEVILS!!

And now I’ve hit Baldur’s Gate—the actual city—and I’m genuinely irritated.

Not because the game is bad.

Because I don’t have the patience to constantly swap party members just to experience all of their stories.

In most RPGs, I tolerate half the companions and ignore the rest.In this game? I want all of them with me at all times.

And the game won’t let me. I can't go that Vampire Lords house without Astarion, game! But I don't have the patience to swap him out and properly gear him up!!

So now I’m stuck choosing who to bring, knowing I’m missing content no matter what I do.

Which is honestly the most frustrating compliment I can give this game. Rant complete!!

Great rant. My rant against Baldur's Gate is that the (awesome) story-driven decisions design gives me a bit of decision paralysis. I had to look up the results of every path before continuing, which made me quit before finishing since it was exhausting.
