Bird of the Week - The Green Heron!

These are gorgeous birds - but the thing that bugs me is that most "green" herons seem to have more of a blue/teal tint to their plumage. So why call them green? Maybe it's because their eggs are green? But I digress -
Compared with most herons, Green Herons are short and stocky. They hang out primarily near water ('cause that where the food is) in Central America and eastern North America. These birds will seem to eat anything - leeches, dragonflies, spiders, mice, lizards, snakes. catfish, and even in urban areas, your goldfish!
Green Herons are one of the super smart birds, being one of the few species of bird known to use tools. Specifically, they use smaller foods they find as bait for fish, throwing it onto the surface of the water to lure a yummy fish their way.

I was curious about the name / color so I have to ask uncle Google.
"Lighting and Distance: From far away or in the shade, the feathers often look dark gray, black, or bluish-slate rather than green.Iridescence: The green color relies on the light hitting the feathers at just the right angle to show off their metallic sheen."
Very cool to watch. A few videos out there showing them in action. Here's one where it uses an insect as his lure.
