The Smart #2: The UK’s Upcoming Shortest Electric Car

The UK is set to welcome its shortest traditional electric car yet with the upcoming Smart #2, scheduled for its world debut at the Paris Motor Show this October before arriving in UK dealerships next year.

Measuring just 9 feet long (2.79 metres), the two-seater micro-EV is considerably smaller than compact rivals like the Fiat 500e (3.63 metres) and serves as the official successor to the iconic Smart EQ Fortwo, which ended production in 2024.

While the Citroën Ami is technically shorter at 7.9 feet, it is legally classified as a heavy quadricycle rather than a full passenger car.

Despite its diminutive footprint, the Smart #2 packs modern EV capabilities under the skin.

Built on a brand-new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) developed under the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, it features a 35.7kWh battery offering up to 186 miles of range on a single charge.

Rapid charging will top up the battery from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes, and the car will feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology to power external devices like laptops or e-bikes.

Smart is currently putting prototypes, encased in Mercedes-styled camouflage through rigorous global durability and agility testing, focusing on urban manoeuvrability, emergency lane changes, pothole strikes, and cabin sound isolation.

Expected to be priced between £20,000 and £25,000, the Smart #2 will serve as the new entry-level model in the brand's line-up, sitting below the larger #1, #3, and #5 electric SUVs.
